Nestled in the heart of downtown Williamsport, PA in the I-80 Frontier landscape of the PA Wilds Region is the Otto Bookstore. Established in 1841 by Alexander M. Dean and named for his partner H.Y. Otto, the bookstore has been a cornerstone of literary culture.
For more than 180 years, Otto Bookstore has provided readers with a carefully curated selection of books spanning a wide range of genres, from timeless classics to contemporary bestsellers. As books became more affordable to the general public, the book business grew. With the growth, the bookstore changed location several times from its origin in Market Square before settling in its current West Fourth Street site in the early 1990’s.
In 2016, the shop celebrated its 175th anniversary and earned the honor of being the oldest independently owned bookstore in the United States. The following year, in 2017, Katy and Isak Nassberg purchased the store.
Beyond its extensive collection, Otto Bookstore serves as a hub for literary engagement. The store regularly hosts author events, book clubs, and community gatherings. Events such as the Great Outdoors Weekend bring together local experts and authors to celebrate the PA Wilds region’s natural beauty and storytelling traditions.
