Ken Starr learned the art of wine making by his father’s side in 1952. While Ken was stationed in Europe with the United States Air Force (USAF) in the early 1960’s, he visited many wineries and appreciated the German style of wine making. From 1966-1977, he started making his own wine. In 1994, Ken purchased property in Curwensville, PA in Clearfield County. After planting the first 12 vines things took off quickly, and in just four years there were 3,000 vines:  Concord, Niagara, Traminette, Foch, and Leon Millot. Inspired by the positive feedback he received, Ken decided to start making his wine commercially in 2005. Starr Hill Vineyard and Winery now produces 40 varieties of wines.

Starr Hill wines made history by becoming the first winery in the nation with tasting rooms and wine sales inside a Walmart store. Local tasting rooms can now be found in Walmart stores in State College, Clearfield, Butler, Cranberry Township and Johnstown, PA. Starr Hill products are also available at Martin/Giant Food Stores, Snappy’s, Rutter’s Convenience Stores, Shop N Save, as well as served in restaurants in Clearfield, DuBois, Houtzdale, and Karthaus, PA. The Groundhog Wine Festival, held at the Clearfield Fairgrounds-Expo 2 Building, is another great opportunity to savor Starr Hill wines.

In February of 2023 Starr Hill Vineyard and Winery released their “Squatch-N-Berry” wine featuring the PA Wilds logo.“We’re excited to partner with the PA Wilds on this wine,” says Kenn Starr, president of Starr Hill Vineyard & Winery. “The PA Wilds Center has done great work bringing awareness to our region, which is something we have always strived to do as a business. It just made sense to have the logo on our Squatch N Berry wine.” Unique like the cryptid the wine gets its namesake, the Squatch N Berry wine blends grape wine with natural huckleberry creating a unique refreshing flavor. In 2024 Starr Hill Vineyard and Winery took home the PA Wilds Best Brand Ambassador Champion Award for the Squatch N Berry wine collaboration.

Be sure to make Starr Hill Vineyard and Winery one of your stops the next time you responsibly explore the I-80 Frontier Landscape of the PA Wilds.
