About Member

The Clinton County Historical Society (CCHS) was founded in 1921 by a small group of concerned citizens dedicated to preserving local history. In the ensuing years, CCHS has grown much larger but continues to preserve history and share it with the public through free programs, special displays, community events, history camps, and programs for children. Heisey House Museum: The headquarters of the Clinton County Historical Society! This building is part of a brick Federal farmhouse built around 1831 by Dr. John Henderson of Huntington County who married a daughter of John Fleming, a local landowner. Jerry Church, the founder of Lock Haven lived here when the building was used as a tavern, run by John and Walter Develing. Although Church and the Devlings both owned the property, the dwelling reverted back to the Hendersons in 1852 when Dr. William J. Henderson practiced medicine here. An extensive collection from our archaeological dig is on display in the Boyd Grieb Ice House. Address: 362 East Water Street, Lock Haven, PA Poorman Gallery: Through the generosity of Steve and Pamela Poorman, we recently acquired the historic church building next to the Heisey House Museum. Work is in progress to transform this space into climate controlled storage, display and collection space, and a meeting room that will be available to other non-profits in the community. Address: 352 East Water Street Lock Haven, PA Barton Street School: The Barton Street School House is a one room schoolhouse dating from 1874. It was transferred to the Historical Society in 1995 and houses memorabilia from local fire companies, early 20 th century Lock Haven history, and the military. Address: Corner of 3rd Street & Barton Street in Lock Haven, PA Castanea Railroad Station: Much of Clinton County's History is tied to railroads. Local railroads carrying logs, coal, and passengers joined with larger systems, providing endless market potential. The former Lock Haven Station of the Beech Creek, Southern, and Clearfield Railroad, located in Castanea and constructed in 1883, is a fine example of Victorian architecture. Owned by the Clinton County Historical Society, it presently houses the Clinton Central Model Railroad Club and their layout of model trains and railroad memorabilia. Of these, only two remain -- one at Farrandsville, located 5.2 miles north of Lock Haven, and the other on state forest land accessible only to the experienced outdoor enthusiast. Completed in 1837, the Farrandsville Iron Furnace was the first and largest coke-fired hot-blast iron furnace in North America, reaching a height of 54 feet. An excellent example of dry masonry construction it produced 50 tons of high quality pig iron per week using equipment imported from Scotland. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Commercial brick making in Clinton County began in the early 19th Century and was then associated with the Iron making Industry. The first firebrick made in Pennsylvania was produced in Farrandsville. Bricks made in Clinton County are visible in the Walkways at the Heisey Museum. 2800 block of Farrandsville Road, Lock Haven, PA
