About Member

Built in 1873 from locally timbered chestnut and hemlock trees, the Wayside has provided weary travelers fine food and drink for well over one hundred forty seven years. Locates between Lucinda and Fryburg on an old Algonquin Indian path, the Wayside has served this area as a Stage Coach Stop, Post Office, Hotel, Speak-Easy and Restaurant. From 1930 to 1996 the Wayside was operated by a wonderful women named Helen Aul, who provided all diners a memorable experience, and is still talked about today. Known far and wide as a great cook and baker, Helen’s hospitality was second to none. Many customers still remember the day when “Eating in the kitchen” was an everyday occurrence whenever the dining rooms were over-crowded, or being sent home with an entire pie because you were too full to eat dessert. Except for the “Nickel Pinball Machine” in the Bar Room, or the “Dance Hall in the Basement”, a night at Helens Wayside Inn was truly like a visit to your Grandma’s house, where everyone dines at the same long table and passed heaping dishes of goodness around the table family-style. Helen’s homegrown smoked lima beans and lime green pickles are no longer available, but her commitment to providing fine food and service lives on. History then goes onto Chris & Della Kurtzhals, who kept Helen’s legacy going for 19 years. Owned today by Mike, Nicole and Jake Maholtz, we along with our dedicated staff will carry on this tradition of great food, a family felt environment while adding our part in this historic love filled “Inn.”
