The Gmeiner Art & Cultural Center is pleased to announce our Main Gallery exhibit for May 2025, “Women in the Near World” featuring paintings by Joanne Landis of Troxelville, PA. The exhibit will open on Saturday, May 3rd with a reception from 2-4 PM.
The reception is free and open to the public, who are invited to come enjoy light refreshments provided by the Wednesday Morning Musicales and to meet the artist who will give a brief artist talk at 3 PM. Joanne considers herself a storyteller – a narrative painter. This exhibit will remain on display until Sunday, May 25th.
Joanne Landis studied at Parsons School of Design and started out in the fashion world in NYC as a model, designer and illustrator. After a time, wanting to do more ‘in depth’ work, Landis began painting, now her life’s work, and made the move to rural PA to an old house with a barn for a studio. Her work has been shown throughout the US and in Ireland and Germany. Landis taught for many years at the Fashion Institute of Technology in NYC and Drexel University in Philadelphia in their design department.
Now a full-time painter, Landis also maintains a studio at the Pajama Factory in Williamsport. She has travelled throughout the world from Europe to Tibet, refuses to use a computer and lives in the real world. Her paintings are meditations of her experiences.
The Gmeiner is open from 12-6PM Tuesdays through Sundays and is located at 134 Main Street in Wellsboro behind the Green Free Library. Admission to the gallery is free.
